The sporting world lost a legend this last week when Dr. Fred Hatfield died. Fred was born October 21, 1942, in Williamsport, Massachusetts and died May 14, 2017, in Clearwater, Florida.

He was a nationally ranked gymnast and pole-vaulter and participated in juggling and acrobatic shows. He also ran cross country and could dunk a softball at 5’6” and 235 lbs. A friend and fellow lifter out of Baton Rouge, LA, Raymond Kobetz, said Fred was the most explosive powerlifter he ever saw. I saw Fred shatter a picnic table with his fist.

1In powerlifting I’ve seen Fred squat at 181 pounds at the Senior Nationals or “Thee Nationals” in 1978 at the Hyatt Airport Hotel in Los Angeles and in Madison Wisconsin in 1980. He could squat 775 at 181, 826 at 198, 881 at 220, 945 at 242 and 1019 at 247 pounds. The day he squatted 1019 he squatted 1052 parallel and got it turned down 2 to 1.

I’ve promoted 283 meets from March 11, 1977 to the present and competed in 78 contests including a Junior National, four Senior Nationals, and one National Power Cup and four National Collegiates. I also promoted nineteen Hawaii World Record Breakers. The 1052 was the greatest squat I have ever seen anywhere by far! Fred was 5’6”, 247 pounds and 48 years of age. He would take a swig of Jack Daniels before every squat attempt and one after each attempt. He would wear a super-suit from Marathon or Inzar that would give 35 pounds along with underwear, T-shirt, and 78” wraps. There was no monolift, which meant he had to walk with the weight. I’ve seen and heard about many of the current 1100 pound squats from reliable old-school sources and the vast majority were 2-5 inches high from what the IPF required in Fred’s era – 1981-92. If Fred squatted today in the IPF, he could squat 1150, and with the monolift in an APF meet, he could squat 1300-1350!

Screenshot_100I trained with him four times and he always emphasized speed. He went down painfully slow with the 1052, but came up like he was shot from a cannon!
Fred worked for Joe Weider for about 8 years before he branched out on his own and wrote numerous books and gave seminars all over the country.

Lest I forget about all the “raw” lifters in today’s game, with Fred in his prime, he could squat 900 raw at 230 and at age 45. He didn’t even start competing until he was 34. Just imagine what he could have done if he started at age 25.

screenshot2014-06-11at102205amWhen I would go to Los Angeles to audition for movie parts, I would on occasion take Fred with me. On one occasion Dino DeLaurentis was casting for “Conan the Destroyer.” The part required the actor to be able to ride a horse at a full gallop and then jump onto another horse. I was asked if I could do that. Fred immediately chipped in that I could do it sitting on the horse backwards. I laughed so hard I couldn’t speak. I was told by a stable owner in Hawaii that I was too big (348 pounds) for her horses. I wasn’t a very good horseman and that part wasn’t meant for me. However, when the producer of “Running Man” with Arnold Schwarzenegger called me to tell me I had won the part of Buzzsaw, I was staying at Fred’s house in Northridge, CA. Fred very generously introduced me to his agent, and through him I received a lot of television commercials in the Los Angeles area.

The Hawaii World Record Breakers ran from 1977 to 1995. Every big name in powerlifting you could think of was invited and attended over the nineteen-year run. But the crowd favorite of the Best of the Best was “Dr. Squat.” He was the “voice” of the Best of the Best.

Fred was also an accomplished olympic lifter. His best clean and jerk was 369 lbs at 181. His best snatch was 314 , also at 181.

3Besides his sports career, Fred served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1960-64 and was stationed in the Philippines.  He had a BS. From University of Connecticut, a Master of Science from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. In Psychology, Sociology, and Motor Learning from Temple University in Philadelphia.

drsquatbigp5In his later years, Fred became a very strong faith-based Christian. So, Fred, I’m asking you to find favor with our Lord Jesus Christ and to ask Him to have mercy on a bunch of aging, beat-up powerlifters. We’re not too far behind you.

You left your mark, Fred, in a sport that didn’t find you until later in life; but when it did find you, it was one hell of a marriage. You infused charisma, fight, intellect, and the greatest skill in squatting of all time. It was my pleasure to know you as a fine person and a great athlete.

Rest in Peace, Dr. Squat

courtesy of Bangor Daily News — WINTERPORT, Maine — The growth Karen Campbell has seen in her powerlifting over the years has been incremental, but after recently setting a world record in the bench press she insists that seeing even the slightest amount of improvement is encouraging.

When you get close to your max, baby steps are always great to expect,” she said.

Campbell trains under the tutelage of Al Stork, who has been training powerlifters for 21 years. She credits Stork with giving her the motivation to keep getting stronger.

Athletes don’t always know what their potential is, and a good coach does,” she said. “Al knows that I’m capable of doing it.”

Stork opened up Stork’s Gym in Winterport and started lifting at the age of 15.

Bodies-Jackie-1 It’s November 2013, and a lifter is about to lift. Feet are planted beneath shoulders, toes are pointed due north. Open hands descend beneath knees, then lock onto the knurled iron bar with a matching iron grip, over and under. Clavicles hover parallel to the bar which is complemented on either side by metal plates: 181 pounds of entropy, all told. The lifter doesn’t notice that the iron bar is as cold as a corpse.

That cold flutters upward on vulture’s wings as the lifter’s shoulders rise. The icy bar caresses shins, knees, and thighs, while hips thrust forward pneumatically. The base of the lifter’s neck drips acid, or seemed to, its tickling trickle burning gluteus, hamstring, calf, and heel from the inside out.

by Gus Rethwisch
12321224_1554583554857612_7728788709580541324_nI have been in the sport for 45 years and I feel Jeff Magruder was the greatest bencher of all time. At 240 lbs., Jeff did a 640 raw bench. At 220 lbs, he did a 560 raw bench press. Jeff did a 661 lb. raw bench in the gym weighing 246 lbs. He benched 515 raw at 198. He did 52 reps with 315 raw.

Jeff’s more memorable meets occurred in Russia, Slovakia, and Italy in the APF where he won world championships. He totaled 2133 at the Hawaii record breakers with 639 bench press, 777 squat, and 717 deadlift. He won the Hawaii record breaker twice and also won a Venice Beach bench press extravaganza with a 595 lb. bench. The event was M.C.’d by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jeff set 23 world records in the bench in his career.

I would include Jeff among the legends in the sport. Ed Coan was the greatest powerlifter of all time. Dr. Fred Hatfield, “Dr Squat” was the greatest squatter of all time. John Kuc was the greatest deadlifter of all time. Bill Kazmaier was the strongest man of all time and Jeff Magruder was the greatest bencher of all time.

Jeff and his brother Mike and I had some memorable times together remembering the great times at the Sushi joint in Seattle and the tri-cities Washington after meet parties. Jeff was always the center of the powerlifting meet and the center of the party. He lived life to its fullest, in business, where he was a successful contractor, in party times with his friends and family and in powerlifting.

Jeff died of Lou Gehrigs disease at age 64. But nobody, family or friends will dwell on that small aspect of his life, because he was much bigger in life than he was in death.

Most Respectfully,
Gus Rethwisch

In Memory of Dr. Gilbert “Guy” Powell ~1969 – 2017

unnamedGuy Powell passed away unexpectedly on February 19, 2017. Guy was a devoted father, husband, principal, mentor and athlete. Guy spent many years competing in the world of powerlifting. Aside from his family, powerlifting was his truest love.

Over the years Guy faced obstacles of injury and serious illness, many times reluctantly forcing him away from the sport. Guy never gave up. He kept coming back. Guy also helped others by taking them under his wing and passing the torch.

Most of all Guy was a humble man.He never bragged of his accomplishments and was always encouraging to other lifters. He was loved and respected by many. Guy Powell may have died on February 19th, 2017 but rest assured , his competitive spirit and fire will never die.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Havvy Ehrich may just be a freshman at Canby High School, but she’s already making national waves.

This week, at the World Association of Bench Press and Deadlift competition in Las Vegas, Ehrich broke Oregon records in both bench press and dead lift — both of which could hold as national records, as well. Ehrich benched 176.4 pounds and dead-lifted 303.1 pounds.

Memo on rule clarification from Gus

To All WABDL Lifters,

imagesI have had quite a few lifters ask me about 2 ply deadlift suits and bench shirts. Power pants (which are illegal) and a single ply deadlift suit do not make a 2 ply deadlift suit. You can’t sew any kind of extra layer of cloth to make a two ply. A two ply bench shirt can’t be 2 ply only in the sleeve or only in the chest plate. Even if the bench shirt is 2 ply in the chest plate and sleeves it’s still illegal. The shirt and deadlift suit has to be sold by the manufacturer as a stock 2 ply bench shirt or 2 ply deadlift suit not altered any way other than size. Bench shirts are 2 ply entirely in all of the front of the shirt and sleeves and either single ply soft back in the back or open back with Velcro straps or without (this is standard with all manufacturers). The neckline as always has to be one complete circle.

In the beginning of WABDL in 1997 the double ply denim bench shirt was popular. It was double ply in front with a little square to secure the neck line in the back. The rest of the shirt was secured with Velcro straps in the back. The straps didn’t have to be used but just about everybody did. The bottom line is you can’t take a single ply shirt and add layers to the sleeve or chest plate – once a single ply shirt always a single ply shirt. If you want to compete in double ply you have to buy either a stock double ply shirt with the neckline secure not open. Those with 2 ply only in sleeve have a huge advantage because they can easily touch and then get the added boost off the chest. If you want to do double ply deadlift you have to buy a 2 ply deadlift suit.

Regarding push pull the total is not a lift. It’s an accumulation of the deadlift and bench or in Powerlifting a total of squat, bench and deadlift. I entered 82 Powerlifting meets from 1971 to 1986. You could never get a 4th attempt for total and you could never use chips on any attempt. A total is simply what you end up with after the highest bench and deadlift of the first 3 attempts. The 4th attempt doesn’t count towards your total. Not allowing a 4th attempt for a total is standard practice in all of powerlifting.

It is also worth mentioning that if you are entered in Push-Pull and you enter single ply as an example, all bench attempts AND all deadlit attempts must be done in single ply. IT IS ILLEGAL TO ENTER SINGLE PLY PUSH-PULL AND BENCH RAW BUT DEADLIFT IN A SINGLE PLY SUIT. You must use the same gear that you are entered as for all lifts. If the judges see this is happening you will be disqualified from push-pull.

Concerning World Records for Raw, it was originally stated that the highest state records for Raw after 2017 would become the World Records. It was stated by me at the Worlds that we would wait another year and we would start them at the end of 2018 and then it was mistakenly put up on the web that we were going to wait until the end of 2019. I have talked with the board of directors and we have decided to go back to what was originally stated. We will now compile the highest state records from 2017 and those will become the World Raw Records. We have also agreed that from this point forward – once we have turned the highest State Records into World Raw Records that the only place you can set a raw World Record will be at the World Championships. After a 5 year period raw world records can be set at any meet the meets the WABDL requirements. Single and double ply national and world records can still be set at local meets which meet the requirements as outlined in the WABDL rules and which have one of the following certified drug testers present to perform the drug test, Mike Saito, Jim Snodgrass, Mark Webber, Reid Solar, Gus Rethwisch, Jim Presley, and Don Miskinis.
Sincerely,
Gus Rethwisch 12-21-2017
